Review and Classroom Applications for Drama by Raina Telgemeier

So I had this idea… Drama by Raina Telgmeier follows the story of Callie, a middle school student who has Dramafound her niche in the drama program. Callie, during the course of the production works hard to create a stellar set, while trying to make sense of her feeling towards two possible love interests. Raina Telgmeier does a great job of keeping Callie engaging and eccentric (see purple hair) while having her grapple with teenage drama on and off the stage.

Key themes of the text include evolving friendships, goal setting, and middle school romance.

Drama could best be weaved into a middle school language arts classroom as a way to analyze and create visual memoirs. After reading Telgemeier’s other books Smile and Sisters, autobiographical memoirs, I would have students create their own visual

memoirs using PowtoonComic LifePixton (or any other online comic creator).

Students, in addition to working on their writing skills, would also strengthen their comprehension and reading prowess by creating a story map identifying the exposition, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution of their memoir. This project would work well at the beginning of the school year as a way to establish relationships and background knowledge of your students, while ascertaining the level of the students writing skills.
